False neutrals on my bike? help wanted!

The bikes starting to throw up false neutrals all the time.

Mainly on down changes from 6th to 5th and when changing from 3rd to 2nd it's jumping straight through 2nd to neutral.

This on a 748 that's done 20,000 miles or so.

It's ucking frightening when you barrel into a bend and lose all engine control as well as braking as you expect the next lower gear to engage and it doesn't. Completely through me a load of times this weekend. So much so, that on the approach to one roundaboput I drove straight onto it without even looking for traffic I was so distracted.

If I don't get it fixed it'll be the death of me.

What do I need to do? Can it be fixed or am I looking at a new box?

First off have a good look at the gearchange linkages as if they are badly worn it won't help

will do.

The chain was changed on Friday after the old had completely destroyed itself in a few thousand miles. Not sure of it's origin but it looks like some cheap crap. It was fitted by a so called expert too.

I'd adjusted the chain after a few miles to take up any "bedding in" but will check it again.

The gear links should be fine, but I'll check.

Odd though that the majority were the jumps through 2nd. It was as regular as clockwork on that one :(

Check the detent plunger. It may have unscrewed a bit or the spring might have become weak. It is screwed into the back of the crankcase to the left of the neutral switch. If the detent is weak the drum can overshoot into a false neutral or even change through 2 gears.
It may be caused by wear in the gearbox drum control fork or it's return spring but that would most likely give problems in selecting the gears with a floppy feel to the gear pedal.
