Years ago I was on an angling boat fishing a wreck nearly 40 miles out from Weymouth. We were anchored in a pretty calm sea when a minute red and blue bird about the size of a gold crest - ie thumb-size - appeared out of nowhere and perched on the tip of my rod. It rested there for a few moments then disappeared out over the sea. No idea what it was as it wasn't any UK species I recognised. It made me wonder how something that small could have got there. Alderney was the nearest land at about 15 to 20 miles away but it didn't look like any species that would have come from there

Strong winds can blow them off course out to sea. Farms on the coast will probably have barn owls.

It may have come from some coastal place and inadvertently stowed away on another vessel it had been resting on, and then tried to get home when it was out to sea. As Unhinged says they don't travel far. They're very territorial and rarely stray far from their local hunting grounds, usually following the same flight paths over their home patch night after night.

Yep, that was my thoughts. Maybe took a rest on some vessel and fell asleep and got carried out to sea. Biggest hazard to barn owls that I've seen is overhead power lines which they fly into when they've got their heads facing down as they hunt.
I'd do everything I could to rescue a barn owl. They're one of our most beautiful and remarkable birds. I watched one hunting one night in an orchard where I was intending to shoot rabbits. It was flying low beneath the branches of the trees listening for mice and such and as I stood there watching it passed within a yard of my face. Never heard a sound or felt a breath of wind. It was like a ghost bird.

Ok fair enough.. this could be a party barn owl ? out getting mad out of it or chasing Birds literally and not knowing his way home .. a bit like our @Dox i can't be cross with that 😆

This is Joe, I inherited him when both proprietors of the small owl/raptor sanctuary where I volunteered died within weeks of each other.

Love him to bits.

On 11 September 2001, Hollywood actor Steve Buscemi – known for his depictions of gangsters and weirdos and once described by The Guardian as a “strangely attractive shoelace” – returned to his old job as a New York City firefighter.

He worked 12-hour shifts for several days alongside other firefighters, searching for survivors in the rubble of the World Trade Center.

Buscemi had taken the Fire Department of the City of New York (Fdny) civil service test when he was 18 and used to work as a Fdny firefighter in downtown Manhattan in the 1980s.

He later left the service to become an actor but has remained in touch with New York firefighter causes, speaking at union rallies and hosting the HBO documentary A Good Job: Stories of the Fdny.

At the time, he said of his efforts during the rescue: “It was a privilege to be able to do it."
