Britain and Iran have history. The British backed the Shah (basically the King of Iran) as he was pro-British and sanctioned huge British oil concessions in Iran. When the Shah was forced to abdicate in 1941 he was succeeded by nationalist Mohammad Mossaddegh, who was not an Islamist but a European educated left-leaning nationalist who set about renationalising British oil concessions. Britain, together with the US, encouraged the overthrow of Mossaddegh in 1953 and the restoration of the Shah (and their oil interests). This led to the Islamic revolution of 1979 and the rule of the Ayatollahs.Oh I see…I didn't realize it was that bad for you poms there. Consequently Britain and the US are hated by the Iranian Islamist establishment and older genrations of more nationalist Iranians who remember the coups and revolutions. All the more so since both countries are allies of Sunni Saudi Arabia who are bitter enemies of Shia Iran.
Younger Iranians (who are the demographic majority) are less scarred by history, more pro-western and loathe the brutal regime of the Ayotollahs. And some older Iranians retain affection for the secular Shah, so Iranian society is fairly split with strong pro-British/US and strong anti British/US feeling in the country. Therefore the Islamist regime sees British and the US influence as a grave threat to their powerbase so it is extremely risky for any British or American national to enter Iran. Even dual-nationals risk immediate arrest, and as it's more for reasons of grievance than political leverage, getting them out again is extremely difficult.
It's a shame. I've met several Iranians through the shooting world (Iranians are keen hunters) and they were the most friendly and civilised people. But they're the pro-westerners. If the Ayatollahs were overthrown they would be the majority - and many of them are Christians - which is why they're so pursecuted at home and why there are so many Iranian dissidents living in the UK.

Yeah i was mostly aware of that. My brother lived in tehran for 8 months in about 1990. He loved it and the people.Britain and Iran have history. Depends on what the political situation is at the time but as a hint - if you are discussing any issue (minor or major) with Iranians they will mostly blame it on the britishYeah i was mostly aware of that. My brother lived in tehran for 8 months in about 1990. He loved it and the people.
I just thought they might allow travellers to pass through based on watching how easy it was for Noraly…itchy boots
She had issues in 2025 with border control and was being 'followed' by 'escorts' - cut her trip short due to the danger but was stupid to go there in the first place this year.Yeah i was mostly aware of that. My brother lived in tehran for 8 months in about 1990. He loved it and the people.

The Tehran regime has been in a cold war with the UK and the US since the Islamic revolution, and this was ramped up substantially when we supported Iraq in the Iran/Iraq war in the 1980's. Tehran operates spying and terror cells inside the UK and the US which try to hunt down political opponents of the regime, including the descendants of the former Shah, who are living in exile in the UK and the US. Essentially any US or UK citizen is treated by the regime as an agent of an enemy state with whom they consider themselves at war. The UK Foreign Office has long warned all UK citizens, even dual-nationals, against travel to Iran. It is very foolish to ignore this advice.Yeah i was mostly aware of that.
