Nipped out this, morning to meet a friend for coffee, as it was fine I thought I would go on the bike, tank half full so topped that up, no, I didn't use diesel !

Anyway bike felt sluggish from the off, didn't think much of it tbh as it was cold, parked up - met friend had coffee, back to the bike and it wasn't for starting but it did eventually.

Rode home, again very sluggish, got to the top of the drive, left it running while I opened the garage door and it stalled - hit the starter to ride it up the last bit of drive into the garage and what an alarming noise it made

It does sometimes pop and fart when trying to start it but this was a mechanical noise and it sounds to have come from the front pot, like a big bangy clatter type noise then nothing - it will turn over but not even hint at firing.

I have not done any investigation, although I have given it a good dose of WD40

Any ideas where I should start looking, Degsy, I will give you a call int morning !

i know my motor makes some nasty noises when it fails to catch sometimes and have always gone with well if it s bust i cant break it anymore and its started fine afterwards ~:? guess this isnt much use to you

Could be a belt on the front cylinder, easy enough to check on the aircooled lump

Hope it's only Tesco petrol

I tell you what if dodgy fuel makes a bike sound like that  it had half a tank of V-power, topped up ( £7 ) of std Shell Un-leaded.

As I say, it stalled and upon trying to re-start it all hell broke loose, I tried again and it will turn over no problem, stinks of petrol, so pump is doing its stuff but not a hint of firing up on either cylinder - its just not catching and I did wiggle the kill switch just in case !

Sorry no update as yet as I have not been able to get up to the garage - what I must say though is how impressed I was that Degsy called me first thing this morning, now that is service for you !

I will get chance to have a look at some point tomorrow - in the mean time I am off doing my duty and being a Judge again :D

Right, its not the belts thank @@@@ - while I had them off I gave it another squirt of WD, popped it back together and just thought I would try it - VROOOOOMM, first touch it started.

I will see how I get on, it was a damp day, although fine when setting off it was raining coming back, maybe it was just water somewhere, although I have no idea what the bad noise was ?

Great news Ian, might be worth checking the connecters for the wiring loom for corrosion etc like mine remember? mine used to make all sorts of noises when trying to start it till i cleaned all the connections up.

MMM lucky man ! Go easy with it ian, id take it to ure mechanic just to make sure. although dunno what he'd do ?!?!

/ian

Ian, glad the belts are not off.
You did check the tension of them tho? - this can cause the running probs you mentioned (apart from the noise at the end) if they are loose.
Hopefully its just a fuel or water ingress problem

C:)

HaHa, belt tension - me ! I did poke 'em and they seemed, well like I imagine they should :)

Get some WD on the plugs etc, check electricals fella remember the front coil went on the 999 ran like a dog a pouring fuel out the termi's might be worth pulling the plugs etc see if they've fouled.

I was thinking about comng round this morning and laughing, but having been there myself it didn't seem fair.

Mildy surprised at how much traffic there is in Kendal int he morning though. I did beep as I past, but it was probably a bit late...

Kendal traffic sucks in a morning, thats the beauty of where I live - I can be out and on the motorway in 8 mins !

not a bad morning for it tbh, fairly bright and not that cold.

Left home just before 7, got fuel and was in Kendal for 8.20 ish

Sorted by 12 and back in the office just after 1!!

Lucky you, I left at 7 , drove to Halifax spent a full day there and got home about 8.30. Quite good fun though, spent the day filming an episode of "how things are made" for the National Geographic channel, a full days work for 5 minutes of telly :)

I watch that! Its like Playschool when they went through the "arch" window and showed you inside factories..........Whens the episode on? And what were they filming?

Sometimes the starter motor makes a clatter(sprag clutch thingy?)when it has stopped in a certain position????

Drr, what kind of company do I work for Davie? :sarcasm: maybe thats a clue? :D

It's a 5 minute segment on how mountain bikes are made, it'll show the process involved in making the frame, painting, wheel building and assembly into a complete bike. I think its going out in April. I'll post details here as soon as I find out the transmission dates.
