Dissapointed with 1098

Just been to Woods to look what's available in case I ever want to trade in the 749, there were 4 of the new 1098S models sat there shiney and sold....
Take the best bits of the Blade, ZX10 and R1 and you have a 1098, the front half of the bike just looks like any other rice burner. The back end plastics look like a Prilla and the swingarm looks OK till you get to the mount and there you have a dogs breakfast of bolts clips and washers.

I am sure it is a fantastic bike to ride fast and on the track but I am slow and crap on right hand bends so don't care about that.

I ride a Ducati because it is different and has -dare I say it personality. Now they look like they are playing "me too" with the Japs. What next an inline 4.

To be honest the Triumph 675 looks better. I'll be keeping my money and 749.

I think Ducati have found that the 916 was such a new and beautiful looking bike that they have made a rod for their own back in trying to do the same again. That design has made all the jap manufacturers use it as the basis and influence on their designs and when you add a wind tunnel into the equation as well, you are going to get a design that will look a bit similiar. Also there are manufacturing laws they have to abide by like emissions and dimensions etc that won't help the designers either. Look at a lot of cars today, they all look the same when you take the badges off.
I only take interest in Ducati and to a less degree other Italian bikes and if you took the badges off jap bikes I would find it hard to tell them apart. So the current Ducati models I like the look of are Monster, Sportclassic Hypermotard and 1098, the ST3 is ok and I dont like the look of the Multistrada or the 749/999 tho strictly speaking it's not part of the current range. So I would buy the ones I like the look of and that's it. I wouldn't even think of go looking at jap bikes thats why I only buy bike mags with Ducatis in and I don't go to bike shows because there is only one stand worth visiting.
So to say the 1098 is like all the other jap bikes is just bollox. You buy a Ducati because the name on the tank says 'this bike is special' and it makes anyone who rides it feel special. Ride a jap bike and that says 'this makes you feel like your 'one of a million riders'......not 'one in a million riders':)

I like them all, some will prefer others, if you like your bike then great, the best bike is always your own as you bought it ........

yea thats what i thought at first mr green, but after a day i now love it, Still keeping my 749 tho. :)

Do you mean "Aprilia" there? They are Italian are they not? What does your inability to get round right handers have to do with the form or function of ANY bike? You're being fairly picky too when all you can notice is the mount of the swingarm, when it has a fecking ugly weld scar right in your face - or perhaps you didn't see that? Or the squinty exhaust end caps? Those are the real issues. Triumph 675 - give over..........

....Take the best bits of the Blade, ZX10 and R1 ....where are all the other parts gonna come from then! cos you still wont have enough to make a silk purse oot of all them 'pigs lugs'....;)

....and here we are again; arguing over the 1098 again.....

zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz:rolleyes:

Green take a read through some of the other posts and you'll find there's a few more like you that find the 1098 shape a bit too "Japanese", you'll also find others who love it, either way its created a lot of interest in Ducati's again which has to be good allround unless you are looking for a new SBK this year and cannot get along with the looks of the 1098, i'm in that position so will keep the 999 and probably buy a Cagiva 500 mono to join it in the garage ( if they actually decide to make them). Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and all that :)

I'm still looking forward to a ride on it, just to see how it compares to the 999 and blade/R1 both of which i enjoy riding but couldn't own.

As for looks the swingarm i can live with that, its a very nicely engineered piece combining sheet and cast, almost 30 fasteners on the fairings i can't :)

yea you never know michael you might have a test ride on 1 & think I WANT ! !!!!

i was in Ducati Glasgow again today & while i was down stairs i chatted with Charlie while he stripped the 1098, he commented its alot more work taking the bodywork off in comparison to the other bikes, like you say 30 fastners

Green, I hated the pictures, I went over to Ducati Leeds got TOLD to swing my leg over it and fire her up, feck what it looks like, that baby is hot, no, I don't like the looks that much and I do prefer the 749/999 look, its one hot bike though, its a Ducati, its gonna perform - forget BSB/WSB this year, look for the testbed, Superstock, thats where it will be, alot of eyes will be watching !

Are the fastners like the Dzus type fitting so any owner can spend another wad of money changing them all to Dzus? It cost me about £30 to change the ten on mine

You'll just need to bang up a few more lags to pay for them.

You will have to explain that comment, have you got it into your head that I work for the prison service? I do work for Her Majesty, but I am more to do the delivery, collection and distribution of her servants communications and acquisitions :)
