I cycled to work today, its about 12 miles , mainly through small villages and off road or on cycle paths as much as possible . I was disgusted by the amount of litter casually dumped at the roadside and I`m not talking about fly tipping but more the huge quantity of sandwich wrappers and drinks bottles etc presumably casually discarded by motorists.
I`m just back from Cyprus where they have a very different way of dealing with rubbish and based on what I saw there and see here their system is very much more effective. They don`t have multitude of council provided bins for each residence but instead for every dozen or so houses there is a skip left at the roadside and usually within about 50-100 metres of the front door. Each house bags its rubbish and drops it at the skip which appear to be collected twice weekly. There is room for large items so no big hassle to dispose of furniture etc. These skips are also at the roadside every few km so and can be used by anyone and that stops fly tipping as well as passing motorists littering although I suppose if you are too lazy to take your rubbish home you may be too lazy to stop at the roadside too.
Either way there was next to no litter there and I`ve seen similar arrangements while on holiday in other parts of Europe. I imagine as well as leaving the country looking better it may well save money as the council fleets going out collecting rubbish can`t be cheap. I`m sure the same system could easily be adopted here but it wont be .

Cans of Monster and RockStar seemed to be the most popular litter of choice for local chavs. No used blobs thankfully, but I wasn't lucky enough to find a porno mag stuffed in a hedge as I would have done when I was a young 'un.
