Well, after thinking about it, I've cancelled the direct debit due out on Monday. 
I figure the money is better in my bank, and I can pay to my new supplier than trying to get it back from a defunct company. I'm still in credit with them anyway.

Using phase change to move/store heat isn't new.... see Perkins of London 1830's and Carrier of New York circa 1900....FFS you lads learned nothing you could be getting all your hot water and heating for free if you would just embrace the latest technology

I am not affected, I dont give two fks about the environment or renewable energy because:
If I could frack under my back garden and get it all for free, bring it on.

I lock in to the best long term deal I can find on a guaranteed payment plan and sit there looking smug when all around me is chaos

Remember it is super efficient at making 34°C water and not any hotter.
You'll still need something to boost the temperature to +50° for normal sized radiators and hot water.
I've got the Daikin ASHP already but in winter I really don't think it's any better than oil and with the stupid hike in prices an oil option would be more economic in terms of running costs - Grant outside boiler would be the expensive part

Ensure the built in immersion heaters are set to OFF for heating. .. note they can come on any way to protect a system not in demand when icy temperatures are ambient. So a "turned off" system can still consume power. Never turn off at the isolator unless all the water has been drained... your system doesn't have core plugs....
ASHP are only useful / efficient as part of a total house system where something is burnt to finish the heating/hot water process... in 99.9% of homes.

VAT is 5%.
Install normally adds 125%, depending on my holiday plans for that year.
It's at 30 odd degrees (I can check the actual but I think it's 35) and during the warm months in summer we were only using approx 500 kWh per month but winter ramps up to about 1500

Too right, you mailed me 2 days ago to tell me you have folded. To top everything off, I switched from Avro energy and had a positive balance, which I was due for refund. Now they have went by the wayside too.

I’m with Octopus Energy and I’ve asked for my credit balance just in case.

I've been through all this before.
In October 2008 E4B (Electricity for Business) went bust. I had been paying twelfth of my annual payment per month since April. Thus the lower usage summer months were averaged out over the year. Not only did this leave me out of pocket but I was automatically switched to British gas on their emergency tariff. Then they made it very difficult to leave them.

I too have fallen victim to a collapsed energy provider, in my case AVRO.
Today I have been emailed by Octopus Energy to say they are taking over my account from AVRO. The email promises that ‘rates and charges will be cheaper than anything available from any other large supplier and cheaper than the fixed prices currently being offered to new customers.’
We will have to see.

I’m with Octopus and they’ve been fine but let’s hope Rob doesn’t decide to try them out…

I am with Octopus too. Just before my bike accident, I left on a sandwich toaster. As I never came home for about 6 months, it was left on for four months. I ended owing Octopus about £1500. They were fine about it and never got heavy with me. It's all sorted out now. I dunno if they are the cheapest for me now, but it would take a lot for me to move. The way that they treated me and he debt was very fair. They never once got stroppy about it.
