I'm looking for a decent quality rear shock to fit a 2004 M1000ie.

That's a post hoop suspension conventional swingarm jobbie at 305mm between eye centres.

Although I believe a whole host of 2000s Ducati's use a 305mm rear shock.

Aftermarket Ohlins, Hyperpro, Nitron etc, or perhaps a Ducati Showa in good condition.

I don't really want to spend 25% of what the bike has cost me on a new one, so am looking for a good used one.

I've realised my options are very limited as there is no room for a shock with a piggyback reservoir.

A remote reservoir might work, but even that could be tight.

What stops you fitting the longer shock, then winding back the spring preload to drop the ride height back to normal (Or a little higher)? Would you bottom out on suspension travel too soon?
 
As I don't know, is the standard shock of a type that could be rebuilt and rebuilt in a way to suit your weight and style of riding?

I ask as there are a number of bike suspension specialists in Hampshire that might be able to give some advice, offer a service or rebuilding cheaper than the ohlins alternative. I understand the cost issue as it's a 16 year old monster and not a 2021 v4 pani

@Nasher , I'm pretty sure the shock is servicable but a phone call to a suspension specialist would confirm.

If you buy a second hand one then it might be just the same problem you have now.

A shock rebuild will be nowhere as expensive as you are thinking on such a basic shock. They can select the right oil and spring if needed, dependent on your weight and style of riding. What I would do is use google for motorcycle suspension specialists in your county, check out the reviews for one or two and have a chat with them, it's only the price of a few phone calls to make enquiries
