1098 ex track bike over the other side

There’s a 1098 ex track bike over the other side.

does anyone know anything about its history?

And what are your thoughts ?

I don’t think so. They’re sitting at 7ish i think, which is what probably thst will end up at trying to tidy it all up i reckon.

£5K here:

if its a std 1098 gearbox thats been used on track with a quick shifter you'll prob find the gearbox at the very least crunches.... at worse the teeth on the dogs have rounded///

what you looking for....
I was just curious really Andy.
To be honest, and i know tospeak heresy, they don’t float my boat like a 999 does.
I think I’ve got enough bits to throw a 999 together and really the only question is whether to build the 999 engine or maybe say bollocks to it and do what you’ve done and put an 1x98 lump in there.

Don't know. The input shaft 4th and 5th are pretty tired, and the cases need a full complete bearing birthday so I think its six of one half a dozen of the other.

as well as that theres the 916 to put together one day, so I’m not short of projects.

theres a guy with a 1098r who was interested in my 900sl, and who might look to sell it. maybe I’d be better served seeing if he’d fancy a swap and some cash if i was really in the market for such a thing.
Im just ruminating at the moment- it just seemed interesting when it came up but not knowing anything about them I thought I’d park it here.

I was surprised how cheap the 1098’s were going for now, is the 1198 a markedly better bike?
Would it be better to push the boat out and go for one of them?

I'd tend to agree with you. For not a lot more you get a lot more.

The thing is a bit of a misconception as the 1098 is fundamentally the same as 748- 1198 as all parts interchange in fact the later gearboxes were larger shafts hence tge two sizes of slipper clutch nut....
Bit like saying all 748 916 996 self destructed because of flakey rockers...
And a bit like the earlier models I put a lot of the problems at the feet of the owner.. poor maintenance, and the rider... poor techniques and a lack of mechanical feel and sympathy..

Were these issues ironed out for the 1198?
Is the 1098R engine actually the 1198 one?

talking of which, if you as a man of the knowledge were to replace a gearbox in a 999 engine what would you go for?
My gear cluster has worn dogs on 4+5 on the input shaft so will need replacing before I get the engine all back together.

The seller, Dean, is the supplier of said reach around engine.

Great guy and a real Duc enthusiast.

oh so he was breaking a totally different 1098 to this one?. I thought it was the same one that he was putting back to road trim. I bought the master cylinders and the slipper off him from that bike that you got the engine from.

no they share the same bore and stroke, but the cams heads valves crank etc are really different the 1198 is better than the 1098 and the std cam profile is really good...

Yes, the 1098R is an 1198 Engine full of upgrades.
wrong...... crankcases are different the crank is different the rods are different the pistons are different and so on.... thought you being a 1098R expert would know that... as above all they share is the same bore stroke cc

That's what the upgrades are ;) wasn't aware of the Crank Cases being different other than sandcast but it is an '1198cc Engine' were they 1098 Cases or a one off for the R model? Did the same cases run trough to the 1198R too?

R crankcases were sand cast very similar to the RS ones...in fact probably the same. I know i compared my 999R crankcases to the RS ones i replaced them with and they were identical (even have some pictures somewhere)
the std 1198 were some extrusion shoit thing.....bit flimsy!
