Having just came back from my 2nd European track day I decided it's time to get some instructions from the pros... so went on to Knockhill's site to see if Niall McKenzie does a 1 to 1 tution course....

found this... Not what I was looking for, but note the NOISE LIMIT at the bottom, has Knockill now got a noise limit ????

We have a noise limit of 105db(A). The noise reading is measured statically at 0.5 metres at 3/4 revs.
 
Right; I've never been pulled about noise levels at tracks (cars or bikes), but most vehicles have been 'marginal' to say the least (including current Duc) ... so, what happens if you turn up, having paid your dosh, and they decide you're over the 105 Db... do you get a refund?
 
You won't get a refund because it's stated in the T&C's it's up to you the owner to ensure that the vehicle adhere's to the circuits rules, they will allow you to modify your vehicle to pass the noise tests though.

I can easily modify the cans on me Duc in about 20 seconds to pass on-site noise tests .... and it wouldn't be the first time something I was driving (riding!) spat out glowing brillo pads halfway down the first straight, before I fly past the pitwall with a cherubic "what?" look on me fizzog :p


Then again, that was for sprint events - might be slightly difficult getting back out for session 2 of a trackday !
 
can anyone actually confirm if Knockhill are now enforcing noise limits ??

How many Db's do sheep have anyway ????
 
that's baaaaa'd poor Ed, can't pull the wool over his eyes you know. I hope your feeling sheepish after that comment, it was a bit of a wooly comment to be honest :D
 
a noise limit looks like achange on prior years. stick to DG track days/nights. Martin's purchasing power should ensure that the testers say what you want them to say.

Hey I been to Knockers a few times now and never been tested. On DG nights and the Knockers track events its the same, all you do is self certify by ticking a box on a form to say you are legal. I've been there on at least 3 different bikes, 2 of which were a bit naughty, and no-one has even blinked.
So I'd not worry about noise.
The weather is the only thing to worry about up there :)

Knockhill noise testing

Knockhill must comply with noise regs. and be seen to be doing so but more often than not will only pull someone if excessively noisey ie over 105dB beside the bike. We were at the last Knockie track day and the wind and rain were over 105dB!!!!
We were at Oulton last week and my mate got a 'fail' at 113dB but two attemps and two red bull cans later all was well although they RB cans were not spotted firing out the can on the 1st hard opening of the throttle on the 1st bit of straight. Most tracks now noise test every bike, so get yourself sorted with a DB killer just in case and you will be aloud to correct it and get on the track.
I've not been on a DG track night; are track bikes aloud?

I had to go to a planning meeting today to fight an application to build houses next to us, first item on the agenda was for a glider club who wanted to use a farm field on the Pennine fellside miles from anywhere to launch their gliders. A neighbouring farm had objected because of the noise, after hours of expert opinions when all comes to all the noise created by the launch is a maximum of 49dB, it lasts for about 30 seconds and the club want to launch about 20 gliders a day, its amazing we've still got tracks we can use when you see stuff like that.
