Insurance + Termis !

Hi All

Insurance is due, so i started trawling around Bennetts & the like.... all saying that they wont insure the bike with termis on as they arent road legal. Ive allways declared "illegal" cans and never had a prob in the past !

Tried Ducati online, wouldnt give me a quote on line..... theyre gonna call me...

Can anyone suggest a company / broker that lives in the real world ?

:(

Darren

try mcebikes.com got a brilliant quote at the bike show...beating the best quote so far by over £100 and i declared the termi system too :D

i'll agree with that. Been insured through them for the last 4yrs and never had a prob with the Bos cans on the ex monnie. You could always say there standard ;)

I insured with Carole Cash and never had a problem with termis. I think the legality of the exhaust is bollux they just want to know if they are on because they would cost more to replace in the event of a claim. Don't say you have standard cans if they are not as this is a reason they can use to refuse payout in the event of a claim.

good point Steve. depends on them checkin your policy. When i got rear ended 4 months ago the assesor just took it for granted, i asume, that the Bos cans were standard as i got a brand new pair fitted due to the damage. Pity i've not got her anymore as they looked and sounded the bizz :(

Renewal quote from Carol Nash came through at £295, havnt told em about the termis yet...

mcebikes.com just quoted £234 (comp) no prob with the cans either & still includes euro / legal / breakdown etc.....

Cheers guys !

:)

Traditionally Insurers ask for modifications to highlight increased performance/reduced braking/more desirable to pinch etc.
Depends how the question is worded depends on your answer.
If bike is bought with a road legal can on it whether new or secondhand, then why would you know what is or was not standard fitment?
Have you checked to see that the exhaust on your car is as supplied by the manufacturer and is not a "pattern" part?
How many people could tell you the alloy wheels on their car are or are not standard fitment as new?
If you fit a non-legal can after buying the bike then it would be easier for an Insurer to argue but if you bought say a 748R which came as standard with 2 sets of cans and chips then you could happily answer the bike is standard and not modified.

Hi,
I've just renewed with ebike for the third year. All details entered on line with all mods entered. In the case of CN some three years ago I did declare my pipes on the phone. When the doc's arrived I phoned them regarding the oversight - nothing entered in the mods section. They had put me with Equity Red Star and immediately cancelled my policy. After a short disagreement they refunded all my money as I had declared everything after they listened to the taped conversation with the sales guy. Their agreement (ERS) with CN - they don't cover non-emarked pipes with Ducati's but do recognise Screaming Eagle with Harleys !! In the case of Ducati Insurance the underwriter is Equity Red Star and for some reason they do recognise non-emarked pipes.

Ducati insurance just emailed me, i declared the termis & single seat, they have quoted £300 - no mention that the termis wouldnt be covered...

Have gone with mcebikes.com now

A mate of mine is a regional Director for very large International Insurance Co. (but that's not the story).

Basically he advises that some Insurers make money denying claims. The cheaper ones will really dig their heels in and find anything not to pay a claim e.g. non-declared performance mods (cans, chipped, braided hoses, etc). Once they have your cash, its a one way street.

The only deterent is a large broker who has the muscle to say pay up.

Moral is declare everything and get all declarations in writing...

Too true Adi, received my policy etc yesterday, shows "no mods" on the agreed statement - even though i declared them.

Grrrrr.

"apparently" shows this as they do not deem the mods (cans + seat) as performance enhancing.

Will be confirming in writing to them all the same !

:(

Darren

Adi, Felix - agree with your sentiments. If the insurer doesn't confirm all mods in writing the only smart conclusion is to conclude they are NOT covered. Often feel this 'we record your calls to protect you/ we don't need to confirm in writing because it's all recorded' stuff will only work one way in the unhappy event of making a claim - and it's unlikely to be in favour of the insured. May be getting sour in my old age, but.........

Hi,
From my many conversations with insurance companies although they may offer insurance cover for non-legal parts i.e cans in the event of a claim they will only replace with legal cans "OEM parts!. In general you'll find the OEM cans more expensive especially if they have the cats' internal.

Since my insurance is due next month I thought I'd see what quotes I could get using internet searches. I tried www.moneymarket.com, declared the exhaust as "no performance gain" and got one quote for £159. All the other 15 or so companies declined to quote because of the "modifications".

My attempts with www.confused.com were even worse. As some of you may know I am diabetic. Insulin dependent diabetics are required to inform DVLA of the condition and their licence is renewed 3 yearly, subject to still being medically fit. I was more than a bit p!ssed off to find that confused.com will not offer quotes for anyone who has a DVLA notifiable medical condition, despite the fact that it is against EU law to discriminate against such persons

Derek, situation is that providing someone, who has a notifiable condition, has advised DVLA and they have granted a licence to drive then Insurance company should take at normal terms.
You should pursue this if you feel like it.
If you want conatct details pm me.

Yes Stewart, I'm aware of the situation and as this is certainly discrimination I'm inclined to pursue it. Please pm me the contact details.
It's handy having a resident DUN insurance man ;)

Think you'll find the exclusion relates to use within an airport perimeter.
Standard exclusion on most insurance policies including liability as potential risks could be catastrophic.

It gets worse. I've found that although they will not quote for motorcyclists who have a DVLA aware medical condition they no such restriction for car drivers
So they are discriminating against persons with a DVLA medical condition and against motorcyclists.
I have emailed a complaint to www.confused.com and also sent an email about it to MCN. Depending on the reply from www.confused.com I may also be lodging a complaint with the Financial Services Authority

I love reading threads like this. Deciding to discriminate against those that generally will just bite the bullet is all well and good but every now and again someone comes along like Derek.

For what it is worth Derek, you have my full support and could I suggest a petition where anyone who will refuse to use these companies until a policy change is inforced can sign up. The larger the voice the sooner these companies will listen!

the one that got me was I rang to get a quote. Any no claims bonus? yes, 8 years of driving cars. Oh they dont count against a bike, Any motoring convictions? Only 9 points that I won driving a car but obviously they wont count against the bike. Sorry, they do, and we won't insure you :comp2:

I have just got my renewal from Carole Snatch and they have got a couple of the 'declared details' wrong!
This might help in the search for a cheaper quote, tho cheaper does not always mean better!
