I'm a bloody pauper and I bought PB Ti drilled caliper bolts and pinch bolts and they come with anti-seize goo cos Ti reacts and binds with some other metals apparently.

And another thing - WTF do you need lock wire pliers for??? Yeah your calipers might bloody well fall off when you wheel a bike from inside to the deck for a photo!!!

The RSR stuff is listed as Grade 5 6AI-4AV and the best priced (but Chinese manufactured I guess), but most Ti is these days innit 🤷‍♂️

305 Stainless would be good enough for my needs but I can't fine the range of sizes in 316 (A4) I thought 304 was the weaker A2 (in shear and yield) ?
indeed. A2 is the communal garden general purpose kitchen fitter bullshit.
A4 is the marine and auto industry preferred due to increased corrosion resistance. A2 won't really survive a crest test very well unlike A4, so stands no chance in a marine environment.

As a rough finger in the air you're looking at a comparable shear similar to an 8.8 bolt
Ultimately keeping it in perspective for a caliper mounting bolt it's always going to be a dirty great M10 shank which unless ridden near works rider / extreme trackday hard isn't going to make you lose sleep over.

And yes, probolt are overpriced dog toffee, always have been, always will be. Back in the mid 90's they started out selling anodised tat bolts that were made of cheese, and now they sell anodised tat of all descriptions made of cheese, and their customer service is pretty much a self entitled arrogance air of you should be grateful to deal with us. If you're going to buy probolt you'll find the same stuff on ebay out of china by the same bloke that makes it for them for a damn site cheaper.

It depends what you're doing. For half the fuckers on the biking planet you could replace all your bolts with chopsticks and you'll not feel the difference if all you do is ride to box hill and willy wave on a hot dry day, banging on about not wanting to put miles on your bike and carbon this and works bike that. go into an environment were you're trusting your life to a little metal tube to not fail and split apart and things get a lot more subjective over and above how shiny and anodised the tat is.

Fun fact for you:
The whole idea of anodised coloured bolts originally came from the American and Japanese racer circuits, where the colour fo the bolt denoted the size. it was so the race mechanics at a glance knew what tool to use to remove bodywork etc. the fact it was an ally bolt meant that it was non structural..
Even now most formula 1 and race cars are put together with NAS bolts, but unfortunately there's no metric NAS.
For all the perceived benefits, they don't go in for titanium fastenings on structural and safety critical areas - something to think about.

I'm kind of thinking of going Ti with the cute little holes now - I will decide soon. There are other suppliers of Black A4 S/S who do 1.25 pitch but the are asking double the price of Ti :oops:
 
Racebolt in my experience, better customer service than Pro-Bolt.

Calling all metallurgists, @sev knows a thing or too (except AndyB pissed him off and I’ve not heard from him for a while) It depends where you want them though. Sometimes Ti is not the right material.

Ugh ... the level of knowledge here is dismal. @West Cork Paul can't figure out pitch even though Pro Bolt couldn't have a more comprehensive guide, and @sev is allegedly a metallurgist stating that "And yes, probolt are overpriced dog toffee" when IN FACT they use "Ti-6Al-4V, an alloy introduced in 1954, is a good general purpose grade. Titanium alloy is available in all product forms. Its density is 0.160 pounds per cubic inch. It can be heat-treated to ultimate strengths in excess of 170,000psi and responds to heat treatment in sections up to 15mm. This alloy is stable at temperatures ranging from 423F to over 1000F" - "toffee" my arse.

And then @Exige goes out and buys the cheapest crap he can find made in Burma. Even then the eclipse of moths bursting from opening his wallet probably knocked the tight bugger over.
