where the ?:<$%& would i get one?

I've got the engine apart but the wire that is there is nackered and needs replacing. Any ideas or suggestions really appreciated.

Thanks for that! Will sit with a beer and ingest that thread, later.

Think I've read too many threads and too many wire selling websites causing a mental meltdown. Time to forget everything and start again.

Cheers! (bound to be silly questions later tho)

If the cable is to withstand a maximum of 35Amps, then the wire size is 13AWG, altough I would use 12AWG to allow derating. However, I would stay clear of a PVC sleeving. It melts very easily and some are flammable! I have used PTFE or silicon coated in the past, although both are difficult to trim the sleeving off to use.
Welcome to the forum:)

Thanks guys! that ducati looked stunning.

ok i'm a little happier with what cable i want, was thinking i needed pvc so thanks for that tip.

The original cable (to me i think - not original to the bike) was 2 core with a total diameter of 10mm that fits snugly into the hole of the casing fitting. If i use heat shrink sleeves its not going to be the right diameter, and most probably not round. The grommits on that site don't look like they will stand up to much pressure (if they need to). Is there an sensible solution to this that i am missing?

Sorry if these are stupid questions, new to making my own cable.

Thanks.

There is a wee bit that you are missing - that 'hole' has a compression washer / grommet deal behind the metal part so it will take up a fair bit of slack and create a seal. I used the heatproof sleeving from VWP to cover the wires then gave a wee smear of black heatproof silicone and nipped it up. Looks good. Fingers crossed. It must be the one thing that I didn't photograph as I was doing it but here is the end result;

Inside the casing where the wires exit the sleeving I used adhesive lined heatshrink to seal from that side

I think that was my main problem thinking it needs special covering to be heat resistant and all kinds of wierdness.

Thanks Pict for your help, much appreciated and relieved to have found a solution. :)

The only caveat is that I haven't had it running yet! :D

What's the worst that can happen?

Oil IS insulation ;) :D

Yeah, ok - I'll go with that on the basis that there are at least two bikes out there that I've rewired (One of which will be mine again next year) :). In the back of my mind though, I suspect the danger is that if the insulation were to deteriorate at the area near the gland nut where the two wires come together could lead to it arcing, which, I suppose *could* lead to either charging difficulty or reg/rect damage. It's the sort of thing that could be managed though.
