Laavas new project. Cadet/Mountaineer

Right so I finally finished pissing about with the carburettor and have been impressed with how well made it is and how good a condition it is after 60 yrs. Although tiny.

Polished up my levers this arvo. They are OEM but cannot put a date on them as they may have been replaced. Spent a bit of time with some wet and dry in a tub of water getting the worst of the marks out then put them on the polisher and then buffed them up to a shine. First photo is comparison after a rubbing with sandpaper. Second photo is comparison after an aggressive polish and last is both after buffing. Am waiting on some new grips now before I finish assembling the controls.

Fitted my handle bars on to the bike. I had to clean and paint the 60yr old u bolts as that size is hard to get and there may have been thread length issues anyway. I polished the little aluminium bridge pieces between the bars and u bolts to make the whole plot look new. I have seen these on eBay for ridiculous money. They are tiny and were hard to hold up to a buffer wheel. The bars are not perfect but unobtainable new and not worth even trying to make. I like the little tab that goes the stem nut.

Lookin pretty smick bro!

Standing on it's own two feet for the first time! Decided to fit the full exhaust mainly so I dont have to store it where it takes up room. The header pipe is 60yr old NOS and the chrome was fantastic. I have it indoors cos my wife is not home!😆😆😆
My next job is panelbeating on the guards, and starting on the engine. Which will require me to clean off my work bench. Now that I have sold my Multistrada, there will be a bit more floor space too!

Age appropriate rug, well done sir 😁

Engine cases ready for reassembly. LH case has a large bit smashed off. Probably by a broken chain. Every other set of cases I have seen has similar damage so it might be a common thing. In light of how good the rest of it is, I have decided to make a masking plate from thin guage ss plate. WTS! First three photos show this. Also need one new cylinder stud. You would not believe how much money some of the Guinnesss on eBay expect for bits like this!

Spent a couple of hours today reassembling the crankcases. The new gasket that I bought months ago appeared to have shrunk beyond the realms of being useable, which was fucken frustrating, and I fortunately had not put gasket sealant before getting it out of it's packet. I spent quite some time carefully steaming it over the kettle and then it was way better so I preset it with case screws to hold it in position and mated the halves up. When all the screws were tightened up, the gearbox was locked up as the gasket was also too thin! So now I am having to make my own gasket but, thankfully, I am good at it so it will be a much better fit in both regards!

Not much, but I have my little motor together now. The side cover is going to be replaced with a better, polished one and the rings have not been fitted yet. Also the shroud setup will be fitted when in the bike and it will hide most of the top end. And not in a good way either…

Seems to be one handbrake turn after another with this little motor. Most of the bits I have bought have been different to the originals and as it turns out the new rings I bought in march are 2.5mm thick for piston grooves of only 2.0mm! So I tried to contact the guy I bought them from in Greece thru ebay but no, they won't allow me to exchange information, such as invoice numbers addresses etc…fuck me, I need a beer now!…

Alcohol is never the answer. Shame on you

You can photo / screen shot your invoice and attach it to a message - and start a return through eBay too up until 3 months I think

Anyway, moving on. Got some rings from a mate from his box of bits that fit, in what had to be the miracle of the week! Fitted the cylinder and head and started on the stator and flywheel. Lots of cleaning and setting up later and we have it looking a lot more complete and then trial fitted the shrouds which I have nearly finished polishing. Next to be polished will be the new lhs clutch cover.
All the individual bits in the ignition plate have Ducati stamped on them as well as their part numbers. Including the condenser. Very cool.

Have you got one of these sir?

Why yes I do! In fact I have just had it rechromed so it is mint! Thanks tho, my latest issue is getting a new side cover as the NOS one I bought in fact was supplied to me wrong and is not going to work although it looks the same at first glance. Was supposed to be 0090.49.661
The only one I could find online was a guy in spain whose website will not post to NZ and so far he has not responded to my email. He must be on holiday.
