A wave form generator would help with your input to the coil.
That first link has an amazing specification, albeit I don't Es tut mir leid, dass ich nicht spreche.
These would have been £20k back in the early 90's

Portable is going to critical in automotive use... Unless you have a rolling bench.
Can't imagine you'll need more than two channels.
