@Gimlet I recall you mentioning getting an R9T to fanny around with . This one is a CAT N so just cosmetic and may be a cheap way of getting one and keeping you busy over the winter. Low mileage and doesn`t look too badly damaged as far as I can see. They seem to specialise in written off bikes , no idea if they are good, bad or ugly.

Cheers DS. Nice find. I am still thinking about an R9T - though I still need to ride one - but it's out of the question til next year, even a bargain project bike like that. But a CAT bike could be a really good. They're dead easy to work on (as long as you don't want to remove the airbox to fit K&Ns which is an absolute mission) and with the vast customising options cosmetic fixes should be a doddle.

Something else I'm thinking about is a late model (2018 -20) 1050 Speed Triple RS. Not exactly a retro but still a much simpler and cheaper jump-on-and-go bike than a true supernaked at twice the price. 148 bhp - the same as my goes-like-shit KTM 1190 is enough for where and how I ride these days.

I think for the foreseeable future I'm done with precious feeling high maintenance £15,000 and above superbikes. I want something I can use more of, more of the time, that'll be a long time keeper without the maintenance costs and complications and depreciation worries of something I've sunk a lot of money into.

A CAT R9T is a great idea. But a 150 Speedie is about the same price as a 2017 onwards R9T - ie. half the price on my Diavel. Hmmm, much food for thought..

Edit: Interestingly, Triumph Newcastle have an R9T and a 1050 RS in at the moment. I'd love to ride them back to back for comparison but as I'm not in a position to buy right now I don't want to be a time waster. Tempting though... 👀

I'd like a 1050 RS in the garage (when I have a garage) - black with the acid green highlights and the Arrow cans...they sound brilliant (y)

I hate the thought of buying new and handing £thousands in VAT to our grubby little government. I also hate depreciation so prefer to wait till a bike is at least 5 years old before considering getting one as by then with luck depreciation is non existent at best or very gentle at worst.
Sticking with the BMW theme , this has just come up on Ebay and is conveniently only a few minutes drive from home for me. There are much cheaper ones around but it looks nice IMO and it looks tidy too. I may pop along over the weekend to have a look.
Anyone on here owned or ridden one ?

Yep. I've watched a few vlogs and they sound gorgeous and everyone enthuses about the masses of easy torque. In real life on the sort of roads I ride an RS would be as fast as anything out there.

I think they're a bit of an under the radar bike. The old 1050 was getting quite long in the tooth and was well overshadowed by the opposition 1 Litre+ nakeds which were all heading north of 160 bhp at the time. And with the 1200 Speedie coming out just three years later the final edition 1050 kind of slipped off the map. But it was a major step up from the venerable old 1050 in every department and in many ways for many riders they could be a Goldilocks bike. And you can buy mint 2020 example for 8K.

Yeah I'm sick of buying expensive bikes on a whim and losing shit loads when I sell them on. I've lost masses on the Harley, the Rocket 3 and the Diavel. Enough to have bought a new bike...

I wouldn't buy new again either. I took a hell of a hit with the Harley. If I'd waited a few years and bought a used one I'd have saved about four grand and Harley's famous bath tub depreciation curve would have flattened out by then and if I sold it four years later I'd have lost very little.

Haven't ridden one of those 1100 Beemers but that one looks mint and it's for nowt. The performance isn't going to set the world alight but I bet it'll have oodles of charm and it'll be utterly bombproof. It does look kind of retro cool as well.

The one above had gone before I got a chance to view it but having read several reviews I decided its the model to get for the Winter this year especially as there are some available at around or below my £2k Winter Hack budget. I made an offer on 1 yesterday and much to my surprise it was accepted so if all goes to plan I get the bike this week then an MOT and on the road for November.
Pics etc to follow when I have it at home.
