For Sale : Ducati 998S, 2002MY, 6228 miles, two owner
As it's the S model it has as standard from the factory :
Deep sump, sandcast, 996R testastretta engine
Fully adjustable Ohlins rear suspension
Fully adjustable Showa titanium nitride coated front forks
Adjustable Ohlins steering damper
Marchesini lightweight wheels
Carbon fibre belly pan
50mm Termignoni exhausts with the correct ecu for these. NB the 996R engine in the S model has 50mm headers unlike the ‘base’ 998 which has 45mm headers.
In addition it has:
Carbon fibre mono seat unit (note this was originally a biposto bike so has the bip rear subframe in situ)
Custom seat pad
Carbon fibre rear hugger.
Carbon fibre swing arm cover.
Carbon fibre clutch cover
Carbon fibre air intake tubes
Carbon fibre covers to airbox sides
Carbon fibre fuel filler
Colour coded mirrors
The bike was supplied to its original owner as a replica of the Troy Bayliss 2002 WSBK bike, this was a graphics kit Ducati were offering to purchasers at the time, (NB, this bike is not one of the 400 Bayliss Reps with the plaque on the triple clamp and which carried the livery of the 2001 WSBK bike). However, the bike has been signed on both sides of the mono-seat unit by Troy Bayliss.
Datatool System 3 alarm and immobiliser is fitted and fully functioning.
Bike will be supplied with original books, all paperwork/bills, including original invoice, 2 keys and 2 remote fobs for the alarm both of which have very recently had new batteries fitted. Additionally an Optimate charging lead is fitted to the bike.
I have a set of 54mm titanium Termi exhausts, 54/50 link pipe and & 54mm ecu plus a set of Ducati Performance rear sets for sale by separate negotiation. These are presently fitted on the bike but are due to be removed.
The original biposto seat will also be supplied with the bike.
FYI, according to Falloon's research, excluding the Bayliss/Bostrom/Matrix/FE special editions, only 405 x 998S with the deep sump 996R engine were made and sold worldwide of which 295 remained in Europe, the other 110 went to Australia and Japan. Due to emissions reasons all US bikes had the lesser powered shallow sump 998 engine, not the more powerful race homologated 996R engine.
The bike was supplied new by Yamaha Sport & Leisure, Harrow (now On Yer Bike, Aylesbury) to it’s original customer who kept it until I purchased it early 2020.
Service history is as follows:
Pre-delivery inspection, 12/7/02 - 6 miles
First oil service and inspection 24/1/03 - 586 miles
2nd service 23/5/03 - 1266 miles
3rd service 4/8/04 - 2443 miles
4th service 16/2/06 - mileage not stated - new clutch fitted (I have no idea why a new clutch was required at such an early stage in the bike’s life)
5th service 2/8/07 - mileage not stated
6th service 4/3/09 - 5212 miles
16/4/19 - service and new belts fitted - 5884 miles
May 2020 - full service including new fuel filter - 5886 miles.
To be done prior to sale - Desmo service
MOT Certs indicate the following mileage:
31/7/06 - 4120 miles
2/8/07 - 4662 miles
4/3/09 - 5212 miles
8/10/10 - 5454 miles
23/8/12 - 5709 miles
20/9/13 - 5777 miles
16/4/19 - 5882 miles
It’s in overall very good condition for a 19 year old bike but there are some blemishes which are pointed out below. Additionally, it does get used (occasionally) so the mileage will go up.
Brakes, tyres and clutch are all good so there really is nothing to spend on this bike for the summer (or the next 12 months) other than fuel.
Asking €16,500 (euro) or something close to that.
Edit : The bike will be fully serviced, inc the Desmo service before the new owner collects.
I’ll also fit brand new tyres to it for the new owner - Michelin Power 5s (or something else by agreement)
A brief video can be seen here.
Both colour coded mirrors have their paint scraped off where the glass touches the inside of the mirror housing.
The number 1 graphic on the tail unit has shrunk causing it to lift and tear where the concave bend is. I suspect this is due to the heat of the exhausts on the graphic. I am presently researching if I can get a specialist to remove the existing graphics and replace them with new ones, but if done I suspect the same issue may occur in future years.
The Troy Bayliss signature on the left and right hand side of the seat unit has been lacquered to protect it. Unfortunately I suspect the preparation wasn't perfect and the lacquer has not cured properly on one side and there is now a visible 'tide mark' and bubbling for want of a better description. NB, the boot scuff marks are no longer on the seat unit, they've been cleaned off.
The CF mono seat unit has a chip to the rear centre, just above the reflector. The small self tapping scree in that area secures the rubber wedge (which retains the rear lights) in place.
The fuel tank has a slight scratch on it, most likely from someone's jacket.
The right hand fairing panel has a scratch on the exposed bump. I was told about this when I bought it and was told it was the result of an 'incident' with a garage wall whilst in storage. I know its repairable (as I've had fairings on other bikes repaired) but I'd rather leave it for the new owner and just be open about it.
The only reason I am selling this bike, and I really am in two minds about it as they really are few and far between, is because since I bought my Multi V4S I know, if I’m honest with myself, this bike will no longer get used and, much as I like looking at it, I’d prefer if it went to another owner who will actually use it. Additionally, there is something else I quite fancy and I need to free up cash and space to pursue that plan.
Finally, I know some will look at the photos of the engine and say 'oooh, that needs to be stripped down into every single individual component, deep cleaned and reassembled' - well I don't disagree, but perhaps that's your next winter project, in the meantime just ride it and enjoy it and the admiring looks it gets
