Today is the 20th anniversary of me taking the wife to see Pavarotti at La Scala Opera House.

I stumped up a kings ransom for seats right in front of him, so that we could fully enjoy the experience.

I've got to say, he was a miserable arse, who didn't like people joining in with his singing.

I left school at the age of sixteen, without a single qualification to my name, and not having the slightest conception of the workings of the real world.

I had little or no grasp of the mysteries of mathematics, the complexities of economics, or the achievements of history. As for science, even the most mentally impoverished troglodyte's knowledge of biology, chemistry and physics would easily have surpassed my own.

All I had to fall back on was my verbose and rather superior patronising manner of speaking, a misguided and embarrassingly outdated understanding of today's society, and a blind faith in things all somehow "working out for the best".

and that's how I became a vicar.

Not so much today, but Thursday I went to meet my old travelling buddy with a view to finishing our Norway/Sweden/Denmark (not in that order) trip; that was cut short a few years ago by my friends friends death and his need to attend the funeral. Since that time he’s moved to Bonny Scotland, so we met halfway, which geographically turned out to be a place called Shildon near Bishop Auckland. We met here:-

I took Mrs K along for the drive and threw our pushbikes in the back of the van.
We stopped for the night in a castle:-

A young woman brought her fiancé home to meet her parents. After dinner, her mother told the girl's father to find out about the young man.

The father invited the fiancé to his study for a talk. "So, what are your plans?" the father asked the young man.

"I am a biblical scholar," he replied

"A biblical scholar, hmmm?" the father said. "Admirable, but what will you do to provide a nice house for my daughter?"

I will study," the young man replied, "and God will provide for us."

"And how will you buy her a beautiful engagement ring, such as she deserves?" asked the father.

"I will concentrate on my studies," the young man replied, "God will provide for us."

"And children?" asked the father. "How will you support children?"

"Don't worry, sir, God will provide," replied the fiancé.

The conversation proceeded like this and each time the father questioned, the young idealist insisted that God would provide.

Later, the mother asked, "How did your talk go ?"

The father answered, "He's a Labour voter. He has no job, he has no plans, and he thinks I'm God.”
