I just found my dream bike... Search for yours
2003 Ducati 998 1000 998cc for sale for £9,890 in Dunmow, Essex
998, 998S, 998R, 998Bayliss, 998Bostrom, 998Matrix, 998FE.

Surprisingly (and I am open to correction here but if memory serves me right) the 998S (in BiP & mono versions) was the one produced in least numbers despite not being a limited edition run.

was this the 2001 model with the Testabassa heads on it Paul, the 2001 996s had the same engine as the previous 916sps did it not?

I can imagine sales not being great as it was being sold in parallel with the 998 at the time and I could see dealers pushing everyone onto the Testastretta engined 998 bikes with their facelift slabside fairings.

So the 998S is worth the most second hard, good news..... carry on.
Especially if you took the Special offer Mono option with your BIP.

Yes I believe the later 996S (there were two generations of it iirc - really must get the Falloon 'bible' out again) was the same as the last 916 race homologated engine (the 916SPS last iteration ?) and what some refer to as the testabassa engine. The 996R homologated engine was the 998cc Testastretta engine that found its way into the 998S when that came out in 2002 - its all very confusing.

Thanks Paul, I've got a testabassa 2001 996s lump parked in the garage so that's interesting to know.

Just for you Sev I went and found the bible.

The 2001 996S engine was the same as that which was fitted to the 1999 123bhp 996SPS complete with the Ti conrods but running a 1.6M ECU rather than the P8 the 996SPS ran. That engine was derived from the '97 & '98 916SPS (which was actually 996cc).
