I'll stick me neck out and go with "evolution"... Yes, it'll be a cheaper assembly to manufacture, but the cost of development would be huge compared to sticking with something like the desmo system that you've had and perfected over decades.
Desmo was originally about valve control and the ability to open and close the valves very accurately in relation to the piston, something that was difficult back in the day with spring technology of the time. That meant getting a very efficient cylinder fill and that helped with power. They couldn't rev the motors hard because of the reciprocating weights etc. and revs meant power so they needed a different route to match the 4 cylinder bikes of the time, and they've stuck with that and refined it. The power outputs in recent times, from a twin, have been very high and would have been never imagined a decade ago, let alone back in the Bevel days.
The new motor will be/is lighter and more compact because of the new tech. Spring technology allows the valve control etc. and yes, it saves money in the longer term.... and above all it's cheaper to service and that's been a primary focus over the last 10 years or so. It'll also be cleaner so will be ready for Euro 6 no doubt. Desmo isn't a "clean" system unless it's adjusted perfectly. The closing springs have got stronger over the years to offset this as regulations tightened.
I've been around these things for years and there's always "resistance" when something major changes....
Bevel owners argued that if it's got belts it's not a proper one,
Belt owners said the Panigale chain drive wasn't right,
When SBK exhausts went belly pan rather than under the seat, "that's not a Ducati anymore"
When the trellis went, that was wrong,
When we went V4 rather than V2 on the SBK that was the end..
What generally happens, is that we ride them, see them, hear them and "they're still great bikes".
One thing that is always a constant is the "emotion" that riding/owning a Ducati brings to the game. The factory know this and always build it in to the bikes.
One thing the V4 GT motor will have is the emotion. The offset crank, like the V4 Pani', will mean it will sound like a Ducati and feel like one to. It'll be more refined for sure, it has to because people demand more nowadays as do the regulators.
If the bike is as good as it appears to be, when it's ridden, I doubt anyone will be able to tell it's got valve springs. I have customers that don't even know or realise the valve train on the bike is unique.
My only problem is the things won't need servicing every year and there's nowt to do with the valves until 60k km's....
