Temporary Ducati owners

I was looking at a thread on the UKMOC site
http://www.ukmonster.co.uk/monster/showthread.php?t=18827
I've never understood why people buy bikes like this only to sell them a few months later, apart from the enormous loss you'll take on the bike (and it seems on all the matching kit) theres the hassle of selling it,changing(paying more:rolleyes: ) for insurance etc.

I tend to keep my bikes for years,I cant be in the minority surely?

I tend to hold on to mine for as long as they last! Can't afford to chop and change, much as I'd like to sometimes. Reckon I'll hold on to my Ducs for a while yet.

Dave, I was just as amazed as you when I read that post! and an S4R to boot too!
Although I've done a lot less mileage on my present bike (of 2 & half years owned) at this time of the year I doubt I've done that little mileage as matey has - let alone with a new bike.
My last monster went at 21 months old with 17,800 miles on the clock in px with my present one.
Planning on keeping present bike until the Hypermotard comes out - and if I can reach that to ride, then I'll do my damndest to try & keep mine and empty piggy banks for a 2nd bike.

Maybe there ought to be a Ducati hire centre for newbies to hire them for a week or so to try them out first - like you get to do with Harleys

I returned to motorbikes in August 2004 and bought a '51 plate ZX6R, in October I part Xd for a ZX7R, in April 2005 i part Xd that for my XJR and then bought the Ducati in October of that year but kept the XJR. I guess it took me a while to find the bikes that really suited my requirements. I have some regrets in selling the ZX7R, it really was brilliant but i then wouldn't have got the Duke in the end! Thankfully i bought 3 yr old bikes and older, would've been gutted to buy a new bike then think 'nah!'

hypermotard...
I could be tempted by that, well, until yesterday when I (was forced to) spent all my money on a people carrier:crazy: :mmph: :baffled: :crybaby: :ohwell:

I'm on that site as well Dave. The guy posted about havin trouble with vibration through his hands and not feelin comfy with it. Maybe that's the reason:dunno:
But yeah seams a shame it's goin so soon. On the other hand it might be financial:shocked:

Yeh I felt for him when I read that...the fact that he's getting rid of the whole lot...may mean something other than simply changing his mind :dunno:

Dave,
I feel that there are alot of guys out there who have got to have the latest coz it's fashionable.
I remember when this all took off when I was selling Ducs for a living. Guys would come into the showroom owning Jap 4s and buy a 916 just coz it was the thing to have. They had either broken them or crashed them within weeks or months because they had no idea how to treat a Ducati
Mind you, Ducatis at that time were still frying their reg/recs and occasionally torching the whole bike. - ahh the bad old days of Ducatisti!!! ;)

...I'll come off my soapbox now!

tour right ed and it still goes on every time the japs bring out a new model you get a lot of folk instantly trading their old one in so they can have the latest. thats why you get a lot with next to no mileage sitting in showrooms.then theres the ones who go out on a bike and scare themselves. theyre usually the ones that sell the whole kit with the bike;)

The good side of it is that there are loads of low mileage bikes that are only a year or 2 old at affordable prices to guys like me ;) The first owner has taken all the initial depreciation.

Its not just ducati's. i bought my KTM 6 months old with 600 miles on it, then my mate bought one which was 2 months old with 130 miles on it.

Both sellers got hit by massive depreciation, bad for them good for me and my mate.

If you read to the end of his post you'll see that his motive is that he's thinking of emigrating to Canada.

Derek, the down side of that aswell is that these very low mileage Ducs might just as well have 20,000 on the clock by the way they were thrashed from new.

...Those poor little valve guides!!!

Think this is common with bikes of all kinds these days ,Yes some of its the "Got to have the latest toy " syndrome , but I also think its more to do with the way bike ownership has changed over the years .
A lot of people now buy bikes as leisure vehicles and only use the bike for sunny weekend rides once or twice a month , After a few months or when winter starts they suddenly start thinking can they justify having such an expensive toy sat in the garage doing nothing .

Personally Ive owned one brand new bike ever , and that was my first . Every bike since has been second hand and usually at least 5 years old . Yes I would love a brand spanking 999,S4R etc etc but I,m never going to earn enough to buy it cash , Plus a mortgage and two kids under twelve means i can't justify signing up for a loan (as if the wife would ever let me ) Oh and I usually keep my bike until they die , youve got to get your moneys worth out of them :D

I'm one of your type Screwy. I've only bought one brand new bike ever and I've had twenty odd. That was a Ducati 860GTS that I bought in December 1976. And I tend to keep them for 5 or 6 years or more.
The current ST4s was 2 years old when I bought it and with exactly 1,000 miles on the clock. But the previous owner wasn't the "must have lastest fashion type", it was the Triumph Motorcycle Company who had been using it for "assessment" when they were developing the new ST Sprint.
It may not have had the easiest first 1000 miles but it was certainly well run in and has had no problems for the next eight and a half and at £5000 I'm not complaining. :)

Opppssss. Didn't c yur post Kd. I'll get ma coat:p

ive got a mate called big davie (hes called that as hes 6`4" and 25 stone as opposed to my mate hairy davy who is much smaller but has a beard and long hair etc) anyway, he bought a blackbird because it was the fastest production bike at the time. about three months after he bought it suzuki brought out the hayabusa which was faster so after a further three months he traded the blackbird in for one. a few months later he found out that if you got a zx12r and put a full race system on it it was even faster. so the busa got traded in for a zx12r which with the full race system was faster apparently. all the bikes all got a small fortune spent on them in extras, bolts etc. and he lost heavily on each one but he needed to have that bit extra. now hes running about on a 1963 lambretta and a limited edition vespa. and is having more fun on them than he did on the bikes. and with both of them he`ll make money when he sells them ;)

So many bikes ...

.. so little time :D

I usually change my bike every six months and tend to have 3 or 4 at a time so there's constant coming ang going in the garage. Why? Because I can and I enjoy the planning/negotiating/organising/riding/thinking/anticipation/experience!

I am faithful to my wife however :)

Now I like this man's thinking

Its not women thats the problem..its kids!
I'm down to my last two Ducatis, after that I've only got the Hondas.
Maybe in my twilight years I'll manage to build up the numbers again.;)
