ST3 - any know problems / issues

Hi again

I'm thinking of getting an ST3 as they seem like a really good all round bike.

Does anyone know if they have any weak points / problem areas I should pay attention to when I'm looking at used ones?

Nice bike, the ST3, shame they stopped making them. How's the singing going? Still touring? is that's what the bike is for? :)
 
My ST3 is back at the dealers for a new tank.
The old tank was leaking fuel from part of the weld underneath.
Not sure if this is common but it coincides with a smell of petrol from my old ST4 that I was unable to resolve.

I love the bike though!1:D

I had a brand new yellow ST3 in May 04 from Alvinsin Edinburgh trading in my trusty ST2. ( A '99 model in black which i'd had from new as well. )
It was possibly one of the first ST3's to be sold in that area if not the very first ! I loved the bigger fairing and the power was great, really quick and usable but i never really gelled with it in other ways. The bike never ran as well or smoothly as the ST2 and i always felt they never had the fuelling quite right. Perhaps i made the mistake of buying one of the early ones - always something to avoid with cars and bikes !
Alvins always sorted the niggles out but it was the only Duke i've owned that let me down on the road, luckily not far from home.
I would imagine one of the later ones would be a better bet or an ST4S.
 
The early ones had fueling issues and there was a recall to replace the ECU and the closer helper springs which was supposed to sort out the low speed issues.
The headlight is a big improvement on the old ST2/4 version which was frankly crap, but with the revised top fairing they didn't improve fairing removal for access for servicing :mad:
From '06 they have closed loop injection with a Lambda sensor that is also susceptible to fueling issues especially if you change the exhaust but this can be tweaked with an O2 Manipulator

I also had an 04 ST3 but it was an 05 model with the wet clutch. It was very smooth, none of the problems Mike mentions.
