how scary is this!!

It actually all seems to go quite well really without road markings, traffic lights, forests of warning signs, bus lanes or cycle paths and pedestrian crossings. perhaps there is a lesson to be learned by some of our street architects and highway planners.

People are all taking responsibility for themselves here rather than relying on an imposed structure which does give many a false sense of security sometimes. Next time you get stopped at a pelican crossing watch carefully how the pedestrian looks unblinkingly at the light looking for the green, then starts to cross, blithely forgetting to check the state of the actual traffic - madness yes, but while they are blathering away on their mobile, or stuck in to the latest hip hop crap on the ipod swinging from their neck they seem to believe in the unearthly powers of kryptonite to protect them........

It actually all works rather well , Hired a 500 Enfield Bullet on Holiday in Goa once and once you got used to a total lack of any sort of rules of the road it was quite fun :D

Near misses depends on if you are using our standards or theirs! There can't have been any fatalities as there are no bunches of flowes tied to the lamposts!

only after you've done all the bizzies, 4X4 drivers, mums on school runs, volvos, rovers and scooter riders.....and traffic wardens......

I'm sure that there has been an experiment in the Netherlands recently where all the road signs, markings, traffic lights and so on were removed and the accident rate actually fell. I also heard that this may even be tried out in the UK. It seems that when all the responsiblity is put on to the road users they end up riding/driving more carefully. Not surprising when you see the chaos on that clip

Yes I think that's correct. Rumour has had it that one of our arterial roads in Harrogate may be subjected to the same "wipe it clean" approach. Trouble is the council have no balls for anything so radical. Funny that the traffic lights at the bottom of Parliament Street here habitually fail in really wet weather, sometimes for hours and no-one really notices. Traffic flows free and easy with no accidents, hold ups..............

olden times

its funny but when i was a kid i used to have to cross the main a1 as it passed through tranent. 4 times a day id cross it no traffic lights, no zebra crossings, nothing and i cant remember any schoolkids getting killed both the primary school/infant school and the catholic school were all north of the road and the main population was south of the road and it was really, really busy as the main road north-south on the east coast was, but we survived,
has the human race lost its ability to survive or something or are we really living in a state controlled by idiots who think everything has to be "made" safe:confused:

Blame the "sue everyone" culture we have these days and the need of the health and safety lobby to justify there jobs .
