Hand Signals WTF???

Those who have been following my saga will know I now have to use hand signals if I ever go out on the pubic highway again.

Right and left no problem but how the freeking hell does one commit to the slowing down signal (right arm flapping like a seagul) and brake at the same time???

(Gord feel welcome to post a corking @@@@ taking comment ;) )

I thought the only hand signals used these days were the V signs you get from old ladies and the like when you give them a toot on the horn to let them know you're there just before they pull out in front of you.

I'm sorry Paul but I haven't been following your saga so I don't know what this is about.

My understanding is to have a daytime MOT you need to have a brake light and as such this signal was not required.

However I fid on a ducati it makes no odds as I hardly ever brake on the road anyway as I use the gears/engine braking. I often find other bikes/cars very near to me rear :(

Ah. The penny has dropped - dayime Mots. In fact you do not need indicators on a bike at all to pass an Mot but if they are fitted they must work. I see what you mean about the braking though.

Watchit Steve, I'm over 50  ;)

I'll have you know I am too! :lol2:

That's fine then, you won't be having with any of this ageist stuff either. ;)

Nah, not me! age is just a number which is very unfairly tagged on to us. If I had my way I would be still half my age, though I still act it, and the toys are more expensive

I use hand signals for turns as i dont have indicators but wouldn't consider no brake light, emergency stops etc?. cant you rig up an LED one between the tail pipes and seat unit like Lily's has / had?

as a long term idiot/conisuer of old italian machines, ive ridden lambrettas without brake lights many times. luckily on the classic scoots the front brake is useless so you only ever use the rear brake. unluckily the rear brake is crap as well, so stoping was more down to booking three weeks in advance and hopeing.
no really, it involves anticipation and really watching whos behind you and what theyre doing. youll find the hand signals blipping throttles etc all come together in time. the slowing down signal id only do a wee bit of it at the start of your slowing, as most idiot car drivers dont have a clue what it means anyway. then just concentrate on stopping safely

had a friend in the shop yesterday telling me about the accident he had on his vespa last year. he stopped at a red light as your supposed to do when he heard the screech of brakes, the scoot gets shot out from between his legs at a rate of knots and james ends up on the bonnet of the car. car owner jumps out, drags james of the bonnet and says "what did you stop for, look what youve done to my car." james writhing on the floor in agony manages to get out " the red light"

you know i think lilys right, i think due to the age of your vehicle you still should have a brake light on the bike.im fairly sure it was only vehicles before about 1950 that could get away with no brake light. or am i thinking of a full mot had to put one on my old lambretta d for its mot, but that was a good few years ago, the rules might have changed

For the benefit of you guys here are the MoT regs regarding lights. They aren't quite up to date at 2001 but should be near enough. Make of them what you will.

Derek thanks for that, clear as Mud I'd say, it mentions age but then has a section were it says they don't have to be fitted. :comp2:

I got an MOT without one on anyway but I think an LED is the way forwards.

the problem with mot regs, especially if your an mot tester, is that theyre open to interpetation in a lot of cases. and you can guarantee that when the ministry have come out to check, youll find that they will pounce on the tester if they decide it has been interpeted the wrong way.

Paul, you do not need any lights for a daytime MOT. ( I had several trial bikes in the past) I thought that if you had a brake light you had to have working tail lights etc. but perhaps I'm talking cr@p or it may have changed. Or both!!:o As Gordon says it can be down to the individual tester. You MUST have a horn for the test and I understand you must have a speedo to use on the road, but the speedo is NOT required for a daytime MOT (but the police have a different rule book to the MOT station!! ):comp2: :comp2:

confusion

:) ....with me being an instructor n all that, it is a question I am often asked, so here is my answer to the main body of the said question, (1.how to signal with the flapping arm & brake at same time)= you only need to signal if it would benefit another road user, if thats the case then by anticipating your slowing down you would then decide if a signal is required. Once you have signaled your intention (flap arm) you can then brake. If no other road user would benefit from a signal, dont bother.
Advanced driving/riding training always follows the same format, defensive driving/riding..ie; LOOK ASSESS DECIDE, if there's anything behind I always apply a little pressure on the brake lever just to put the light on a moment before I actually alter my speed, this raises the awareness of the driver behind( if he's looking..:D )....and he is expecting me to slow, this is exactly the same action as the hand signal, warn first, then reduce speed to allow for what's goin on ahead.

MOT rules: if they are fitted they must work. THATS IT!
if the tester has nothing to test regarding the items that fit the criteria of normal MOT's he simply puts N/A in the tickbox and issues a daytime only MOT
the brakelight issue is one of personal choice for your own peace of mind if you are not that confident at flapping your right arm while you are doin a hundred and plenty!...enjoy...;)

Re the, 'age' thing. I'll remember that comment Martin next time I'm in the shop.
From one of your, 'more mature' customers.

Hand signals

The flapping right hand signal is probably unfamiliar to road users under age 40 but the Beezer I took my test on in `71 had no indicators or mirrors and the technique was synchronised hand and foot movements:: right hand off throttle and left feathering the clutch with foot easing the rear brake ( they were as efficient as the front in those days). By the way SAGA insurance is not cheap for over 50`s. I am still trying to find a more competitive premium than the wallet squeezing £675 Norwich Union charge and Saga was just over £900 ( fully comp)

Paul, back to the top of the thread;

buy a Guzzi California (like mine) then you can stamp on the foot brake pedal which operates both front & rear brakes simaultaneously, then do your seagul impression - and all this while at full lean, scraping the running boards, silencers and expensive panniers!!! (ask Freak & Lily - they'll tell yer!!!);)
