Proposed ride on the above date, single day event. Timed to miss World Cup Finals, BSB, other DUN events, should be a great day. 300 plus miles, around the Yorkshire Dales, North Pennines, and North Yorks Moors. Start point to be decided, but Kendal might seem likely, or possibly Skipton or Penrith, as I believe most of you live nearer that side of the country. All points East after that, with lunch somewhere on the East coast. Places visited will be, in no particular (as yet) order: Alston, Barnard Castle, Richmond, Helmsley, Guisborough, Whitby, York, Leyburn, Hawes, Skipton, Kendal et al. I know most of the roads well and this will give a cracking ride. Who's game? This one goes ahead to give a big rideout in each of the months of May, June, July and August between DUN and DSC. Let me know your thoughts. Start will be around about 0830 ish, finish whenever.
 
Count me in, and I'm sure a few fellow Scots would enjoy this one too. Do I need a phrasebook with me, though ?

I don't know where will be best to start Pete, there's only me and Ian over here ( AFAIK), maybe do it as a one where you can join in at certain times as well? Which i think all the upnorth events should be, not everyone can get to the start but might be able to make a meet place for a brew.

I'll be up for it, can probably find a bed or 2 if anyone's traveling up or down for it as well.

Yes it'll be possible for people to jump on or off the "train" at any point. As numbers grow I'll put such junctures into the frame. I will be at the start wherever it is anyway. I was thinking last night that it would be entirely possible to conduct the whole ride within, more or less, the whole of Yorkshire. Such a big place, such a lot to see........

OK, Dalesman's Dash ride planning.

Given that we will start at Penrith to help the Scottish boys, and that we will aim for lunch somewhere on the East Coast, does anybody have any special requests about where we go?

I can make it very basically a scenic and energetic tour of Yorkshire, leading to a finish up and over the North Pennines (via Alston etc.) heading back to Penrith.

Within that brief, aiming to make 300-350 miles, do you have some favourite places/roads to include? Ones that you have done before, or ones you have heard about and want to try?

Comments please, and we'll try and please everybody! Over to you.
 
I'm easy really! I can pick up anywhere on route at the places you mention. Probably depending on which way you intend to take either Skipton or Leyburn. Then Hawes, Kirkby Stephen, up as you say to Penrith and then Alston etc. Its probably best that you just decide a route and let everyone fit in with it? Alstons 100 miles from my door on the back roads so I could just pick up wherever and then make my way home when I feel like it. I regurlarly do 400 miles on a sunday on the b roads up there so I'm not too bothered about the distance. You could always include a loop through Kielder to keep the boys north of the border happy? Perhaps from Alston via Brampton and back via Hexham? So many good roads up there its hard to pick a route!
 
Why not start at Skipton, head north to Penrith meet usthere and then round in a clockwise direction, breakfast at Hartside?? down teesdale or weardale east across north yorkshire to coast for lunch then back via helmsley/thirsk into leeds area, us northerners continue on following original route?? I'd think 300 miles is about the max if folk have to ride in to a start point as well, more than that on an SBK and your ar5e and wrists will know about it :)

I'm happy to start at Skipton and take the route I posted before up to Hawes and then Penrith. I dont like using the A65 as its too heavily policed and used in the summer. Skipton to your house via Hawes probably a couple of hours ride so its no problem. Like you say a clockwise loop is a good idea where people can join/leave wherever suits them. I'll prepare the spare room Michael for you if your taking the 999 and your wrists give out!
 
My initial thoughts went something like this. Anticlockwise basically.

Gizmo lead the initial group out from Penrith, down to Kendal via Shap. Pick up another group there (me and MartinH plus others) then A684 to Hawes for breakfast at Penny Garth cafe. That should get us there well before the lunchtime crowds.

Lunch at the coast, head back inland via some of my cracking roads and finish over Hartside and the cafe. Logic there being that the crowds at Hartside will have dissipated, plod might have got enough collars and gone home and the views up there are absolutely awesome in the late afternoon-early evening period.

Back to Penrith and split. 300/350 miles no problem, even on 996 with pillion!

Yeah, that would work, I was just thinking that if any one from further north was coming down they would have to set off very early but doing it anti clockwise means they could meet us at Hartside mid afternoon if they didn't want to do the whole route. I'll leave it to you Pete, just suggest a time at Penny Garth and we'll all make our way there for it.
 
If anyone from further North were coming it would be best for them to come down the night before. When we did the Midgie Masher we trailered up to Stirling Services the previous night, slept in the car then did the ride, which as you know was billed to start at 0900.

I don't think it would be possible to do much else, to have a realistic chance of success for the day. A start time of 0900 from Penrith would mean doing about 50 miles down to Penny Garth, so probably 1000hrs would be good. Fill bike and belly then blast away for a 90 mile leg or so.

I will take a good long look at the "stages" later this week, giving a better outline then of the proposed day.
 
9 is fine with me, Hawes is easily do-able in 1 hr, A6, B6261, Old Tebay services at 9.20 then onto A685, Mallerstang or Sedburgh road then up to Hawes.
 
All sounds good, is the Hawes road still horrible and broken up through the wooded sections, think I only did it once from Sedbergh last Summer and there was gravel and potholes everywhere !
 
The road from Sedburgh to Hawes has got a little rough in places over the last few years. To be honest its only a couple of miles or so thats got a bad surface, the faster bits are quite good. Very nearly dropped the 996r on one of the slow bends there late last year as there was a wide and deep gravel patch all the way round right in the middle of the lane. Was bad enough for me to turn round and have a look (and take a picture) Much of the poor surface section now has a 40 limit in place anyway.

Unless you go down the 65 to Ingleton theres no other way to get to Hawes though!?
