The penalty was because they didn’t get approval from the other manufacturers to make a modification to their allocated engines. Yamaha asked, but the other manufacturers insisted that detailed drawings, designs, specs, etc were provided first. Obviously Yamaha were not going to reveal their insidey bits to competitors so claimed everything was good with the remaining engines they had unopened, so no need for a mod. Seems they tried to secretly do the mod anyway but got caught.

Apparently the anomaly was with their original 'Jerez' engines. (The ones that blew up). It's only right now, that those engines have been called-out as being illegal and Yamaha are being penalised for it. Their penalties have been decided due to Yamaha's results at Jerez. (Hence why Petronas has lost more constructor points than the factory team).

I don't think they tried to mod it. Apparently they 'fixed' the issue by reducing the RPM limit.

I agree though. I think we're gonna see some other manufacturers contesting against this decision too. Now it seems more blatant why Yamaha wouldn't want to give any other manufacturer their plans. Not just for obvious reasons (like showing the secret insidey bits) but for the fact they didn't want to get caught (and that's if Yamaha actually did this on purpose).

It could have been a genuine mistake on their part but I'm not sure 😂
