well after oulton i thought cool thats me had my mechanical/electrical for a while, but while up at knockhill on Monday night my rear sprocket carrier mount fractured & an exhaust spring popped during the session making my bike sound like a Harley which ended my session early.

All the jap guys were laughing ( again ) :o

i love my bike but heads telling me to try the dark side whereas my hearts telling me to keep my bike.

ah well ill put up with it till the end of the year probably, then decide.

Trackday riding clearly puts more stress on a machine. Just need to do more spannering and inspection to avoid what seems like the inevitable.

What the others have said Ian.
My NC30 is a 'reliable' jap bike, but last saturday one of my footpegs worked loose  on the track and it started misfiring which meant I had to use my mates bike.
You put your bike under a lot of strain and if it grumbles at the wrong moment then that be doubly dissappointing, especially as you've paid to use it at that time.
(Oh, and it was an R1 that blew up on track leaving oil for 300 yards down the start/finish straight- none of the Ducati's there had as much as a hiccup:p )

don't do it yet Ian

you do need to spend more time on the bike when it's on track more, but they can be totally realible.

The only problems I have had with Bob have been me crashing or when it got wet ON THE ROAD!

Lily is bang on, I don't recall any reliability issues when using my bike on track, what year is yours '03 ? Its a 4 year old bike that has been ridden, bits will start to wear out fella, go through it !

I wouldn't be so damning Ian, things go wrong you have to remember it's getting thrashed on track now not pottering around on the road.

The sprocket carrier was probably failing for a while you just didn't spot it, springs fly off at will, and you know coils go all of the time.

Best thing to do is buy spares fella, admittedly sprocket carriers are a new one on me, but coils, springs etc you should carry just in case

Chin up mate. I know it can feel like this sometimes. There’s been several occasions I’ve thought the same thing, but it seems I like the pleasure/pain thing too much. I kinda like being loved one day, only to be completely fcuked over the next for no apparent reason. My first proper girlfriend was half Italian :banghead: :D

As far as I can the see, the only way to go is to have more than one ;)

Have a couple of mates that take their road cars round Knockhill at every opportunity. They probably do as many track miles in a year as road miles. They expect and pay serious amounts over the year for the pleasure. Like others say, on the track you are either full on the throttle or full on the brakes and things will break far quicker. If you want to do track (on whatever) you got to be prepared for that. If this is your only bike then perhaps a dedicated track bike is the answer amd trailer or van it to the track?

I used to have Jap bikes and I've tried loads of different machines since I moved to Ducatis. Believe me, Martin's right when he says that once you've had a Duc, nothing else will make you happy.

Ian, the key to reliability is keeping it well serviced and in my experience Ducati has been more reliable than the jap bikes I have owned. You won't be able to post on here anymore:eek: instead you will have to sign up to www.japcrap-upnorth.com:D

Girlfriend(s)? I'm with you on that one...........:D

ducatis are NOW more reliable than honda and thats a quite bold statement, but as with everything you get some bad ones but it all comes down to maintenence. i always over maintain my bikes, oil every 1000 miles plugs every 2 tyres replaced with 3 mm tread left etc. but make sure u do the same with track use. on my race bikes i do a full service every 2 tds, or after every meeting. people have said its too cautious but my bikes DO NOT BREAK DOWN EVER

i thought that as soon as i posted it. only bike im havin mither with is my commuter bandit it keeps blowing the downpipe to link pipe gasket to smithereens. oh and it handles like a bus
