Have you had/have a 916-996-998 and if you've had more than one version, what stood out as the differences between them and what were the positives and negatives. Also if others were looking for one of the above, what advice would you give to potential buyers? Multiple choices are allowed.

Avoid like the plague, there is nothing here for you except woe and expense....
Prices are dropping through the floor.....

MY00 996 and MY01 748 and 996s
the 996 is such an analogue bike in comparison to the panigale etc,
very rewarding when the roads, weather, moons align etc, a pain when not.. many of the bikes for sale now will need a rebuild in the near future as rubber, plastic parts start to decompose.
I have Prepped 2 748 for sale over the last few months for friends, and there was a lot of rubber degeneration on hoses, electrical connections, and also corrosion on connectors, surface plating's and also welds.
if I was to buy a 996 now I would want to see some kind of evidence of strip and rebuild ( or price adjusted accordingly)
the 996s I had was a great bike, but still managed to throw a gearbox output bearing on me on the track, but its starting to get harder to find good technical support, i have had to look at friends 999 where the dealer completely messed up his slipper clutch due to not knowing the build format etc,
we have to remember that a most are now 20 years + and in comparison to a modern superbike with 180hp, the gap is huge ( 996/1098 conversion ongoing :) )

I've got a 916, 98 bip and a 998S.Bostrom variety and 2 X 748, E and SPS.
998 has def got the best engine for grunt and smoothness but strangely I have the most fun riding the basic 748E, probably because it's easier to ride it that bit harder than the others.

That seems to be quite an often mentioned opinion in regards to the two levels of 9's abd the 7's. In another thread a few mentioned the gsxr 1000 and the 750 with the 750 being the better all round bike and most rewarding to ride

Despite the natural evolution suggesting a 998 should be better than the 996, there seems to be more love for the 996, or is there??

No, don't be silly - 998 is the most valuable, followed by 1994 Cagiva moped factory built 916's, followed by every other variant, last of all the 996 cooking fat models 🙂 (y)
