Modern John Deere tractors employ software owned and licensed by John Deere which means:
  • Modern John Deere tractors cannot run without software
  • Farmers using these tractors cannot repair "their own" tractors, they have to get JD to come out.
  • Farmers effectively do not and cannot own "their own" tractors as a result, they are leased from JD.
  • The software allows for soil composition of fields to be determined to a 1cm by 1cm grid of precision, enabling a measurement of likely crop yield for a field. This information is available to the farmer and also to John Deere, for onward transmission to ... whomever.
  • Some farmers use Ukrainian firmware to hack their tractor software, thus enabling the transfer of effective ownership of the tractor back to the farmer
What a time to be alive.

If I remember correctly some American JD owners sued JD and won they now have access the the diagnostic software which allows the farmers to service their own tractors.
The software still calls "Home" I'll bet, telling JD (and whomever) what the tractor has been up to.

And if it's a phone app diagnostic, it'll be phoning Home with whatever the farmer is up to, too.

Today I learned precisely how we are doing glaciology wrong.

I'd been aware of this 2016 paper,

Glaciers, gender, and science: A feminist glaciology framework for global environmental change research

for some time but today I took the plunge and listened to a podcast that goes through the paper, line by line.

If you are ignoring the mystical, emotional and sexual aspects of glaciers and of their study, you're doing the science ALL WRONG. For instance, if you simply attribute the slow movement of glaciers to the sea to the effect of melt-water, gravity and fluid dynamics, you are ignoring the fact that glaciers dislike the smell of grease. You will have no idea that cooked food and grease in a cold climate can, overnight, create more glaciers.

How can you hope to tackle climate change if your knowledge of glaciers consists only of evidence collected by men who explored glaciers over the past two hundred years and through satellite imagery? Without the feminist and indigenous people's points of view to balance the hegemonic, paternalist bias in glaciology, you are doomed to failure and won't understand the topic.

(I shit you not. Our species is in so much trouble.)

Mother glaciers have been calving icebergs for millennia, only for the cruel oceans to melt away their offspring. Mother nature matters too.
You aren't listed as one of the paper's authors, Hugo.

Can you cite a peer review of your work? If you can, it's proper science.
