750ss Cafe Racer. First time project

Hello to all

Hope you are interested in this project.

It's the first one I have attempted

Bought a 92, J plate 750ss in late 2011 and been tinkering since

As it's my first project I want to keep everything fairly simple, no engine tuning apart from filter and such and the look will not be fancy

So here are some photos:

Just starting to strip the plastic off

Spent the afternoon stripping the ducati to allow me to start work on the frame and wheels

Managed to get my daughter to help!

Now all I have is a box of bits :wtf: Not much there

The engine has been stripped of paint and sprayed

The next thing will be to change the cambelt

Next: The powdercoaters

The frame just out of the oven and still warm

I have not done any grinding and cutting of the frame yet. The powdercoating costs £40 and I wanted to see what it would look like

I will cut it about and get it done again as it's cheap enough

The swingarm as well though I am not sure if it will stay red!

Just spent a couple of days putting the bike together to get a look at what it will look like

Started by getting the engine on the blocks and frame attached

Attached to the scaffold bar that is fitted across the office/workshop

Not sure if the upside down forks look strange.........hmmm

Maybe it's the gold that looks wrong

Will be looking for a single 7" headlight soon so a bracket is in order

Will have to make a start on the wiring loom as well

Using a monster loom, don't know what to do with it but I am sure I can work it out!!

All the bolts and stuff have been cleaned up before deciding the colour to use

Held up by one strap

Update 13 June. 12

Nothing much to report

My work has picked up after a couple of years scrabbling around, with a few other issues taking precedent over the bike

Had an issue with the chain tensioners corroded in the swingarm

Managed to sort it.........flattened the end, centre punched it and drilled them out!!

I needed to buy some extra long drill pieces and, because the drill pieces are very bendy that long (6inch) I managed to get some steel tubing for the drill to go through, leaving an inch at the end so the drill doesnt bend

Result!!

A bit stuck at the moment

I need to sort out the wiring :banghead::banghead:

Must get on with it, though I don't have much of a clue!!

Just a thought! would you not be better getting a monster headlight bracket and adapt that for the front light fitting? You would only have to tap two 6mm holes in the top yoke and tap two m6 on the botton yoke.

Good effort mate. One question - why did you powder coat it first and then start cutting?

Sam, just found the cost too much and fancied having a go at making some that mimic the trellis frame, not sure I have though!!

I have someone who is going to make some cnc brackets when I can get round to giving the nod

Yes you will even after a dry build! Maybe not as much change as you have with this but you will almost always say I wish I had done. p.s. this page takes an age to download. Maybe just my computer.

If you want to discuss any aspect of the build you know where I am. Just give me a shout or call round. I could have saved you a lot of time on producing the GRP mould for the seat hump. I'm doing something similar myself soon. I have done loads of these techniques, I have tube bending gear, workshop with welding/bronzing kit, a lathe and so on. If it helps..............otherwise I'll keep my mouth shut. Maybe.

Just bought these to see what they look like in the rear of the frame tubes

Update August 2012

Roped in the Father in Law to help with adapting the monster loom

It has all been labelled up so I am now fitting it

Looking a bit sad for itself

Luckily he has a better understanding than I do

However, these parts are unaccounted for, its a monster loom, anyone know what they are for?

On with putting and extra disc etc on the front

Managed to get a rh caliper from an Aprillia river, £20...bargain, thanks to the list provided by iconic944ss, thanks

One of the local members has sorted me out with a new brake reservoir

Now waiting to get a disc

I think I have an odd (i.e. not part of a pair, rather than peculiar..) disc. Will be next week until i can sort it out, unless you are going to the masher or can have someone collect at the masher and I'll make a special effort to find it.

Price is 12x Kelpie and 12x March of the Penguins delivered to my door if you are interested.

After a bit of a lay off have started on the monster wiring loom

Now know which bits connect where so the next bit will be to cannibalise the 750ss loom for the connectors

Converting the front to twin disc set up, more for the looks than performance

Got a pair of discs from an ST2 and a caliper from a Cagiva River plus a reservoir from a 900ss

Headlamp is painted black and I have made a bracket from tubing to match the frame

Have shaved down the original seat foam to form a new one to fit the tail unit

A new tail unit has been build, slightly thinner to sit on top of the frame rather than hang over it

I have found a light for it

Monster clocks fitted to temporary bracket

Will keep you posted

Will probably have to use spacers and bearings to make them fit

Don't want to rain on your parade but unless you know spindle sizes and I/D and O/D of the bearings you need and also will the discs match your calipers (what amount of offset do you need and can you get a disc to that spec to fit these hubs?) or will they foul the spokes and can you move the calipers to fit etc then you are possibly in for a huge amount of work and it may not be worth the hassle.

Will hubs fit between your fork legs?

Unless you are 100% sure I would give them a miss. Sorry.
