The other day I took the 996 out of the garage ,started as normal but then cut out as I went to pull away.
Initially thought I had stalled it, but it refused to restart.
Once I took my helmet off I could hear the starter was not working. At this point smoke started coming out from under the tank!
Turned ignition off and disconnected battery, traced the smoke (and strong plastic burning smell) to the long since defunct Meta 357T alarm unit.

Take a step back-I have owned the 996 for 20+ years and it came with the 357T fitted, however several years ago the alarm stopped working but did not affect the bike so i ignored it.
I usually do about 1500 miles each year and the 996 has been reliable.
Alarm unit now removed and next job will be to remake the loom back to standard.
Just relieved this happened on my drive and not when on the road.

My 996 had a Meta alarm on it when i got it just over three years ago, i find bike alarms a pain in the arse. My 900ie had an alarm on it when i got it 7 years ago and that went in the bin, useless!!

Rob, had a similar situation with a 357t and my then 2001 blackbird, it had started being pissing about, sometimes working sometimes not.
Went in the garage one morning and could smell hot plastic, no smoke or burning just that acrid smell, turns out it was the failing internal battery of the meta.
Anyhoo meta was removed and I checked and sorted the wiring and she perfomed great until I sold her in 2015 with 57K on the clock!

It will be the Nicad PP3, replace and enjoy the benefits of an alarm

Back in the late 90's, insurers were keen on alarms. Mce offered to fit my bike through an approved fitter, a meta 357T. I asked them how much discount would having the alarm fitted on my insurance quote and they said it would make it cheaper by £100. However, I would have to fit a £300 alarm to get the £100 discount.

My financial advisor Diane Abbot said it was a good deal.
