748 Owner's Diary

I don't want to tempt fate but I finally think I've sorted it...

I've been going through the wiring loom looking for bad contacts and on inspection of the connector for the atmospheric air pressure sensor I found it to be the colour of snooker chalk and roughly the same texture! The rubber boot on the wiring connector was absolutely shot so I bought some replacements and cleaned everything up. Test rode the bike yesterday, doing some riding in traffic and out on the open road, and it was absolutely faultless. Felt and sounded much smoother than I can ever remember, smelled less fuely and was far better behaved at steady throttle.

Really hoping this is it sorted, the dodgy contact makes sense to me since the issue was intermittent and tended to rear it's head after the bike had been wet. I suppose in the absence of sensible air pressure readings the bike could randomly run well or badly depending on the actual air pressure. Chasing this issue has meant I've only managed about 450 miles on this bike in the past year!

Finding any excuse to jump on the bike now to add miles and prove that it is in fact cured!

So far so good. Had been noticing a little bit of a stumble and the odd backfire now and then so have decided to tweak the mixture pot a little. Bike warmed up on the stand and the stumble was present just as you pick up of closed throttle lightly, fine if you grab a handful but less so if you're going for finesse! I found the pot set to exactly the middle of its travel as the base setting. Leaning it out seems to make it worse and the idle sounded noticeably less smooth, full rich smoothed out the idle and throttle response but absolutely stank so I've backed it off a bit from there, probably around halfway between full rich and the original set point.

Sounds good, revs cleanly, just need a test ride now.

Hope all goes well. 👍

150 mile ride out today, Aberdeen - Huntly - Dufftown - The Lecht - Ballater - Aberdeen (via South Deeside). Bike was pretty much perfect, no stumble, no backfire and slow ridability greatly improved. Throttle response in the midrange was a little softer so I've leaned it out just a touch but overall a huge improvement over how it has been recently.

So the bike was fine but f**k me I'm out of practice on a sportsbike. Ankles, knees, hips and wrists all pretty stiff after that run. I've done most of my riding on my big GS this year and it makes you forget how physical a sportsbike is on the twisty stuff.

Loved it though.

That being said, I've a hankering for an Aprilia RSV Mille R... talk me out of it!

Mille , well they are good value 👀

I've still got the bike I had at 36 🤔 I must be very young 😁
