Laavas new project. Cadet/Mountaineer

Right so got stuck in this evening. Stripped the frame, pissed oil all over the floor from the forks, cut out all the spokes, removed the wiring loom and stood shaking my head a bit.

Right, so I started with the paint stripper as the frame is just too big for the electrolysis bath. Black over red paint is what it looks like at this stage. All my paint stripper was old and almost ineffective. But it did get some off.

So just pulled my first hub out of the evaporust and it has been bead blasted. There is still some discolouration but I would have to sand blast to get that out or polish. But it would not have been polished from new I am sure…
Am thinking that I oil it as is and then respoke. My options are, sandblast, polish or paint otherwise…
What do ya reckon? The front hub is better than this one…

Damn it! Now I have to wait for the rain to stop!
I sandblast outside, total loss, and have glass bead in my cabinet. Too lazy to change over!

Bead blast, it is not to harsh compered to shot blasting.:unsure:
 
Vapour blast, polish, but not to a mirror finish would be my opinion. I wouldn't lacquer it as over time moisture would get in & then it would look shit. You'd have to strip it down again then to clean it up whereas if it's left bare, (as long as you're not going to ride it through winter on salty roads !!) at least you could get a toothbrush inbetween the spoke to clean off any corrosion.
 
Right so I sand blasted enough to remove the discolouration, then bead blasted it again. I am happy with the colour and texture so am contemplated rubbing the surface with either acf50 or olive oil. Maybe boiled linseed oil? Anyway, I did one set of my sl125 projects hubs with acf50 and it still looked good a year later. Whadya reckon?
We dont have anyone locally to do vapour blasting but I am going to have my engine cases vapour blasted when all the planets align!

Ok, so I bought some Mr Sheen and liberally doused the hubs and rubbed it in. Watch this space, relacing about to commence.
In other news, I posted a want ad in NZ Classic buy, sell, exchange and bam! A dude contacted me and for a token gesture price has supplied me with a better frame than I have, 2engine covers that I was missing, a seat, forks and yokes that arent bent, switchgear with wiring, footpegs to bolt onto the new frame and a bucket of bits that I need to sift thru. They are mostly for a four speed but mine is only three and hand change to boot vs his foot change

I certainly do feel lucky to have scored like that! I did have to do around 6hrs driving tho, but I am aware of how unlikely I am to find better treasure locally!
